Critics' Choice Awards 2016: Ryan Reynolds wins best comedy actor for Deadpool

The Merc with a Mouth just scored himself a Critics’ Choice Award.

Ryan Reynolds won the Best Actor in a Comedy prize during a ceremony in Los Angeles on Sunday. The actor was nominated alongside Ryan Gosling for The Nice Guys, Dwayne Johnson for Central Intelligence, Hugh Grant for Florence Foster Jenkins, and Viggo Mortensen for Captain Fantastic.

“I was not expecting this. I’ve prepared nothing. So I’m just going to focus on Tom Hanks,” Reynolds joked during his acceptance speech. “No really, though, You’re a huge influence on me. My 2-year-old daughter, the first full sentence she ever said was, ‘There’s no crying in baseball.’ I’m not kidding.”

Reynolds went on to thank screenwriters, whom he called “the architects.”

“It’s a hugely undervalued asset in Hollywood,” he said. “Oftentimes their job is very hard. They’re alone in rooms in their underwear, weeping softly, their tears working as lube on their old-fashioned typewriter machines.”

Earlier in the evening, Reynolds accepted his award as Entertainment Weekly‘s Entertainer of the Year, dedicating the honor to cancer nonprofits.

After appearing as Deadpool in X-Men Origins: Wolverine, Reynolds starred as the character in an R-rated standalone film, which quickly became the highest-grossing film of the X-Men franchise. Tim Miller directed Deadpool based on a script by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Reynolds will return as the Merc in the sequel.
