The Sinner season 2 trailer snares Carrie Coon in a new mystery

There may be a new star and a new story, but it very much feels like The Sinner.

The USA Network released a new trailer for the second season of its intriguing anthology series. With the case of Cora Tannetti (Jessica Biel) closed, we now turn to focus on an 11-year-old boy (played by Elisha Henig) who murdered his parents without an apparent motive. The constant is the presence of Bill Pullman‘s Detective Harry Ambrose, who returns to his hometown in rural New York to solve this new mystery.

Carrie Coon (HBO's The Leftovers) plays Vera, a mysterious figure described as "a complicated, enigmatic piece to this haunting puzzle."

"Dark and disturbing is my bread and butter," Coon told EW of her character. "Season 1 sold it for me. I loved the idea of a whydunit instead of a whodunit," she added. "It's just good old-fashioned fun."

But The Sinner showrunner Derek Simonds is hesitant to say anything about her character. "There's very little I can say because understanding her is a part of some of the reveals along the way," he said. "She holds a lot of secrets, and she's deeply, personally involved with the events of the crime. I'll just say she's a very formidable, complex woman."

In addition to the trailer, the network released a first-look image of Coon's husband, Tracy Letts (Lady Bird, The Post), as Jack Novack, a childhood friend of Harry and the father of rookie detective Heather Novack. Jack holds some resentments towards Harry for not working to maintain their friendship over the years, though he's excited about Harry's return.

Natalie Paul (HBO's The Deuce) and Hannah Gross (Netflix's Mindhunters) were also cast in the next round of The Sinner. Biel remains attached as an executive producer.

Season 2 premieres on Aug. 1 at 10 p.m. ET/PT on USA Network.
