Anna Kendrick‘s collection of funny autobiographical essays and captivating show biz stories, Scrappy Little Nobody, is out now and EW is excited to present an exclusive excerpt from the audiobook, read by the writer herself, and an exclusive author’s statement recorded by Kendrick.

In the excerpt, the actress reads the first part of the introduction, which reveals how she came up with the title and gives readers a taste of the humor that’s in store. Kendrick describes looking back at the journal she kept at 17 and being surprised by how scared she was at that age, and how she persevered. She decides to hang onto this scrappy little nobody even though she’s far from a nobody now. A self-described neurotic, she describes the importance of expressing what’s going on in her head, because, as she says, “Here’s the thing about crazy: It. Wants. Out.”

In her author’s statement, Kendrick hilariously freestyles about her book. “If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have any serious parts in at all all, and there are a couple of serious parts, because I was totally bullied into making some serious parts by some very helpful people,” she jokes. She also reveals plans for many more memoirs, saying “Eventually, it’ll be like the Goosebumps series and I’ll get somebody else to start writing about my experiences.” She reveals that she was tempted to make her memoir only available on audiobook, since she says she’s bad at communicating in print and her spoken inflection is so important. But fear not, readers, she worked hard on making sure her tone comes across in the book.

Scrappy Little Nobody is out now in hardcover and audiobook.
