The pop icon took to the stage during Sunday night’s ceremony for an intense rendition of “Shallow” — the tune’s first-ever televised performance — marking her fifth consecutive year performing at the Grammy Awards. Clad in a sparkling bodysuit, Gaga channeled serious rock star energy, staring into collaborator Mark Ronson’s eyes as she head-banged and worked the crowd, swinging her glittery microphone stand back and forth and flipping her hair as her backing band jammed alongside her. Gaga — a nine-time Grammy winner as of Sunday evening — has performed during every Grammys telecast since 2015, including a Tony Bennett duet lifted from their co-headlining album Cheek to Cheek, a Nile Rodgers-assisted David Bowie tribute, a hard-rocking Metallica collaboration, and a stripped, piano-driven performance of her 2018 single (and 2019 Grammy-nominated tune) “Joanne.” Earlier this year, Gaga received the second and third Oscar nominations of her career for her work on A Star Is Born — one for Best Actress and the other for co-writing “Shallow” (which she will perform alongside Cooper on Feb. 24 at the 91st Academy Awards) with Ronson, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, and Anthony Rossomando. Though she hasn’t released a solo LP since her platinum-certified, Americana-influenced 2016 record Joanne, Gaga told EW during an August 2017 interview that she is hard at work on her upcoming sixth studio effort. “I’ve started writing,” she said of the planned project, which is expected to drop at some point during her current, multi-year Las Vegas residency deal that includes both the Enigma pop show and the traditional Jazz & Piano set. “I have a lot of ideas and a lot of things I want to create, so you’ll see in a bit.
