EW's editorial guidelines Published on June 22, 2017 12:42PM EDT Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany have to learn how to heal in the powerful first trailer for the Boston Marathon bombing drama Stronger. Gyllenhaal stars in the true story of Boston man Jeff Bauman, who was waiting at the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon to cheer on his then-girlfriend, Erin Hurley (Maslany). He lost both his legs in the attack, which killed three people and injured hundreds of others. In addition to being the subject of one of the most widely-circulated photos from the attack, Bauman was also able to help the police identify the suspect in the bombing. He went on to recount his experiences and recovery in his 2015 memoir, co-written by Bret Witter. Peter Berg brought the Boston Marathon bombing to the screen with his harrowing 2016 drama Patriots Day, starring Mark Wahlberg, but Stronger takes a more personal look at the attack through Bauman and his recovery — both physically and emotionally. David Gordon Green (Our Brand is Crisis) directed from a script by John Pollono. Stronger will hit theaters on Sept. 22.
