Harry Potter fans lucky enough to see Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on the London stage when it debuts in previews next month: bring tissues.

That’s the word from author and prolific social media star J.K. Rowling, who was asked by a fan on Twitter if the Potter continuation will “make me cry.”

“If it doesn’t, we’ll be checking your vital signs,” Rowling wrote. When another fan asked why Rowling enjoyed making her fans feel emotions — lest we forget Dobby and pretty much everything that happens in the final Harry Potter book — the author replied, “I’m a writer. If you’re not feeling, I’m not doing it right.”

Based on an original story Rowling developed with playwright Jack Thorne and director John Tiffany, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a two-part play that focuses on Harry’s youngest son, Albus, and catches up with Harry, Ron, and Hermione 19 years after the events of The Deathly Hallows. The play’s brief plot synopsis:

“It was always difficult being Harry Potter and it isn’t much easier now that he is an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, a husband and father of three school-age children.

While Harry grapples with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs, his youngest son Albus must struggle with the weight of a family legacy he never wanted. As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes, darkness comes from unexpected places.”

Previews for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child begin on June 7, with a London debut set for July 30. The script for the play will be released in book form on July 31, Harry’s birthday.
