The Australian rapper dropped the first single from her forthcoming album In My Defense at midnight on Thursday, alongside the new song’s accompanying visual featuring Vanjie (currently competing as a returning contestant on Drag Race‘s 11th season) and fellow Drag Race graduates Mayhem Miller and Shea Couleé. The funeral-themed music video opens with Couleé running over the titular Sally Walker with her car. Seeing Sally dead and in a pool of blood on the road, Couleé wonders aloud, “Didn’t her momma teach her not to play in the street?” We continue on to Sally’s memorial services, where Vanjie and Mayhem are eulogizing via the power of dance as Iggy raps from the pews. “I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. Bitch, I was supposed to go, it was for a good reason!” Vanjie told EW in December, eight months after she became a viral star — and caught the attention of Lil’ Kim — thanks to her one-off Drag Race episode. “I got sent home, said my name, and was mentioned in every episode without being in every episode, so that was good enough for me!” “Sally Walker” marks Azalea’s first new song under her new distribution deal with Empire, which she inked after parting ways with Island Records last summer. Its parent album was partially recorded with producer J. White, who also collaborated with Azalea on “Sally Walker.” “I’m really proud of my album. It sh—ts on 95% of everything I’ve ever made & its only half done,” Azalea tweeted of the collection in January. “[It] really is that album that’s gonna make you wanna say f— you to your own reflection for ever doubting you.” While she hasn’t released a full-length LP since 2014’s The New Classic, the 28-year-old “Fancy” hitmaker dropped a string of singles throughout 2016 and 2017 in anticipation of a sophomore album titled Digital Distortion. That project was ultimately shelved, though Azalea did release a six-track EP Survive the Summer late last year. Her last single prior to “Sally Walker” was the Tyga-assisted “Kream,” which reached No. 96 on the Billboard Hot 100 en route to receiving Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America.
