George Romero's zombie classic Day of the Dead to become Syfy show

One of the late director George A. Romero’s classic zombie films is being disinterred for the small screen.

Syfy announced Friday that it is picking up a 10-episode series based on Romero's 1985 movie Day of the Dead, the third installment of the filmmaker's original undead trilogy, which began with 1968's Night of the Living Dead and continued with 1978's Dawn of the Dead. The original film starred Lori Cardille as a scientist named Dr. Sarah Bowman attempting to find a cure for the undead plague in an underground research facility guarded by soldiers and ruled by Joe Pilato's increasingly unhinged Captain Rhodes. Syfy's version is described as an "ode" to Romero's movie and concerns six strangers trying to survive the first 24 hours of a zombie invasion.

Syfy has also picked up another show, The Surrealtor, about a realtor named Nick Roman and an elite team of specialists who handle the cases no one else can: haunted and possessed houses that literally scare would-be buyers away.

Both shows are expected to air in 2021.
