Grey's Anatomy promotes Kim Raver to series regular again

Teddy Altman is back — for real this time.

Kim Raver has been promoted to series regular for season 15 of Grey’s Anatomy, EW has learned.

Raver initially joined the ABC medical drama as Dr. Teddy Altman back in season 6, quickly being upped to series regular. “I am thrilled to reprise the role of Dr. Teddy Altman as a regular,” Raver says. “Returning to Shondaland with the incredibly talented Krista Vernoff, Ellen Pompeo, and the amazing cast is heavenly. I have a special place in my heart for Teddy and feel very lucky to have the opportunity to continue her story.”

Teddy, the former head of cardio and mentor to Cristina Yang (Sandra Oh), left then-Seattle Grace Mercy West to take a job at a military hospital in Germany at the end of season 8. The character returned for a handful of season 14 episodes, reuniting with Owen (Kevin McKidd) after his sister was found alive.

After Owen and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) ended their marriage, Owen even flew to Germany in a bid to finally try for a relationship with Teddy, but she knew he was still hung up on Amelia. However, Teddy returned to Seattle during Thursday’s finale seeking employment, being named interim chief as Bailey (Chandra Wilson) takes a sabbatical. Oh, and Teddy is pregnant with Owen’s baby, which should make things very interesting considering Owen looked primed to reunite with Amelia in the finale.

The news comes on the heels of both Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw exiting Grey’s as series regulars in the season 14 finale. Find out how their characters were written out here.

Grey’s Anatomy will return Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET this fall on ABC.
