SNL: Alec Baldwin, Kate McKinnon break character, urge everyone to vote

The final Saturday Night Live cold open before Election Day included a twist ending that saw Alec Baldwin and Kate McKinnon break character and urge viewers to vote.

Once again playing Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton respectively, Baldwin and McKinnon stopped the particularly barbed cold open to apologize. “This whole election has been so mean,” McKinnon said. “I just feel gross all the time,” Baldwin added.

With that the two grabbed hands and ran into New York’s Times Square, where they hugged opposing voters, handed out balloons, and celebrated America together with help from the sounds of Arcade Fire’s “Wake Up.”

Back in the studio, Baldwin and McKinnon hit the SNL stage with a plea to the public. “None of this will have mattered if you don’t vote,” Baldwin said. McKinnon added, “We can’t tell you who to vote for, but on Tuesday, we all get a chance to choose what kind of country we live in.”

Before the inspirational end to the cold open, the sketch was a biting affair, with Baldwin’s Trump kissing an FBI agent, a shirtless Vladimir Putin, and even a member of the KKK during an interview with CNN anchor Erin Burnett (played by Cecily Strong), who ignored Trump’s shows of affection in favor of hitting McKinnon’s Clinton about her emails.
