Freak out! The Freaky Friday musical movie gets a premiere date

Disney Channel’s Freaky Friday musical movie finally has a premiere date!

Everyone’s favorite trading-spaces story will be hitting the small screen Aug. 10 at 8 p.m. ET.

“This movie is a creative collaboration with our Theatrical colleagues who developed an original stage musical from a beloved story,” Adam Bonnett, executive vice president of original programming at Disney Channel, said in a statement Wednesdsay. “Now we’ve added a fresh twist by adapting it again into a movie for kids and families — with Broadway talent on and off camera — that has the potential to be a classic [Disney Channel Original Movie] for years to come.”

Based on the company’s recent stage version of Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, this TV musical will star Heidi Blickenstaff as Katherine and Dolphin Tale’s Cozi Zuehlsdorff as her daughter Ellie, Playbill reports. Blickenstaff is reprising the role she played during this past winter’s La Jolla Playhouse run.

Blickenstaff and Zuehlsdorff announced the release date in a video posted today. (It also includes some delicious-looking baked goods.)

Directed and executive-produced by Steve Carr, the movie also stars Ricky He, Alex Désert, Jason Maybaum, Kahyun Kim, Dara R. Moss, Jennifer LaPorte, Isaiah Lehtinen, and Sarah Willey. Pulitzer Prize-winning composers Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey are back as the music-and-lyrics team.

Freaky Friday has been made into two movies: The 1976 version starred Barbara Harris and a young Jodie Foster, while the 2003 version featured Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan in the mother-daughter roles — who could ever forget this classic, peak early-2000s musical number?:

Disney Channel has also announced that it’s rebooting the classic Halloween movie Hocus Pocus with an entirely new cast.
