Angelina Jolie's First They Killed My Father roars in tense new trailer

Angelina Jolie’s latest movie is being touted by critics as her finest accomplishment as a filmmaker to date, and EW has an exclusive first look at the drama’s riveting new trailer.

Starring newcomer Sareum Srey Moch and based on Loung Ung’s memoir of the same name, First They Killed My Father dramatically recreates her coming of age in Cambodia under the oppressive Khmer Rouge regime, which killed more than 1 million people between 1975 and 1979. Told largely from Ung’s perspective, the filmtraces her youth as a 5-year-old child soldier whose family was ripped apart by the radical Communist movement.

Produced alongside one of Cambodia’s leading artists, The Missing Picture helmer Rithy Panh, and co-written by Jolie and Ung, First They Killed My Father debuted to strong reviews at the Telluride Film Festival, with critics praising Jolie’s direction and Anthony Dod Mantle’s immersive cinematography.

Awards buzz for the film continues to build, as it has been selected as Cambodia’s official submission for the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar. It will contend against other dozens of other entries, from countries including France (Robin Campillo’s Cannes competition title BPM), Chile (festival favorite A Fantastic Woman), and Sweden (Ruben Östlund’s Palme d’Or winner The Square), for one of five nomination slots.
