After helping to shatter a glass ceiling as the star of Marvel’s first major movie with a female lead, Oscar-winner Brie Larson is stepping into The Glass Castle, a coming-of-age drama revolving around a young woman who grows up amid a poverty-stricken family, and EW has an exclusive first look at two images from the upcoming film.

Adapted from the New York Times best-seller of the same name, the film version of the 2005 autobiography stars Larson as the memoir’s author, Jeannette Walls, who, along with several siblings, was born into a clan of dysfunctional nomads fronted by Rex, an alcoholic, and Rose Mary, an artist.

Though Rex’s addiction often imposes upon the family’s well-being, he sparks his children’s imagination with feelings of hope to distract them from their daily struggles. According to the film’s official synopsis, the family’s nonconforming lifestyle serves as both “their curse and their salvation.”

Academy Award nominees Naomi Watts and Woody Harrelson costar as Rose Mary and Rex, respectively, while Max Greenfield has a supporting role as David. The film reunites Larson with her Short Term 12 director Destin Daniel Cretton, who also co-wrote The Glass Castle‘s screenplay with Andrew Lanham (The Shack). Ahead of her Academy Award win for playing Ma in 2015’s Room, Larson’s turn as the lead in Short Term 12 earned high critical praise, with many year-end critics groups and awards bodies — including the Broadcast Film Critics Association and the Indie Spirits — ultimately nominating Larson for their respective Best Actress honors.

Earlier this year, Watts shared photos from the film’s set to her Instagram page, offering a glimpse at the gaggle of actors playing the real-life Wells family during production in West Virginia.

The Glass Castle is slated for release via Lionsgate in 2017. Check out EW’s exclusive preview of the film in the images above.
