Star Wars Land: Disneyland releases new images

There's a new artist's rendering of the Star Wars land being built at Disneyland in Anaheim, California. The 14-acre addition (similar to the one being built at Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida) will be the biggest single-theme expansion at the parks in history. Obviously this concept image tilts toward the fantastical. Still, Disney has said it does represent some of the attractions that will be included. Let's fly a little closer and see what we can find ....

This appears to be Poe Dameron's X-Wing -- the one Kylo Ren and his posse destroyed outside the Jakku village in The Force Awakens. There's our old friend, that one-of-a-kind droid, BB-8, ensconced as his co-pilot. Unless they're blowing out the budget for real, don't expect actually flying X-Wings, but this does suggest a land set more in the "modern" Star Wars era than the past.

That doesn't mean there won't be vintage elements. Off to the port side of the X-Wing, there's a partial view of a familiar ship -- Princess Leia's Tantive IV. This was the very first starship seen in any Star Wars movie, the cruiser Leia is escaping in with plans for the original Death Star when Darth Vader intercepts her. (Or, at least, it's a ship very much like that one.)

One of the attractions we know we'll be getting is a Millennium Falcon ride that will allow Disneyland and Disney World guests to step behind the yoke of the Correllian freighter that made the Kessel Run in less than yada yada. Even if the actual park won't look exactly like this illustration, it looks like we'll be getting a near life-size version of Han Solo's ride, partially tucked within a hangar on this mountainous world.

This circular courtyard appears to have a large beast of burden standing at the bottom. Hard to tell from this painting what exactly it is. It's roughly the size of a Bantha, although it doesn't appear to be as hairy. Looks a little more like a Happabore, the wide, pig-like creature seen guzzling water in The Force Awakens. There's a carriage attached to its back, so maybe guests will be able to ride a Star Wars creature around this area, kind of like a pony carousel?

Another familiar starship sits on a landing pad in the corner of this community -- a Return of the Jedi-era Imperial Shuttle. This was Emperor Palpatine's favorite ride, and could make another interesting attractions. Would guests fly it? Do they just explore it? Maybe it sets off in pursuit of wherever the Millennium Falcon ride takes you.

Finally, this shows how Star Wars land will abut the Rivers of America. There's a very non-galactic-looking keel boat in the water, and part of a rail line that is probably just the Disney railroad that threads through the parks. Strange to see the melding of worlds, but at least this image doesn't show a massive parking garage as a backdrop.
