Beware: Here's the terrifying new trailer for Stephen King's It

You’ve been warned.

The trailer for the new big-screen adaptation of Stephen King’s It makes all those random real-life clown sightings seem like a little kid’s birthday party.

The movie, out Sept. 8, takes half of King’s 1986 novel and tells the story of a group of young outcasts in the small town of Derry who rise up against a shapeshifting evil that feeds on fear and has claimed countless lives over the ages.

One of the creatures man forms is Pennywise the Dancing Clown (played by Bill Skarsgård) who turns up in a storm drain one rainy day to lure a little boy named Georgie Denbrough to his horrible demise. Georgie’s brother, Bill (played by Midnight Special‘s Jaeden Lieberher) is one of the leaders of the Losers club, and he plans to never rest until he find out who — or what — led to his kid brother’s disappearance.

Directed by Andres Muschietti (2013’s Mama), the film shifts the time period from King’s original 1950s setting to the 1980s, and a planned second movie would pick up the story in the present day, with the (surviving) grown-up Losers returning to Derry to confront Pennywise one last time.

Otherwise, the film appears to be faithful to the source material, featuring everything from Georgie’s paper boat to the dilapidated “House on Neibolt Street,” which serves as a gateway to Pennywise’s underworld, and even getting gruesome with the bloody encounter one of the Losers, Beverly Marsh (Sophia Lillis), has with the creature in her own bathroom.
