Monday night’s Late Show with Stephen Colbert was interrupted by a very special guest — “Stephen Colbert.”

While discussing Donald Trump’s controversial proposed budget plan, the host was confronted by a familiar face from his past — his Colbert Report alter-ego.

“I’m here because America needs me,” said the fictional Colbert, visible via split screen. “Plus, I wanted to stop you from making an ass out of yourself on network TV with your misguided analysis of Trump’s budget.”

As “Colbert” insisted he could provide better commentary, the Late Show Colbert ceded the floor to his counterpart, who triumphantly emerged with a sword and Captain America shield.

“Folks, Trump’s budget is getting heat because it’s supposedly cruel to old people for no reason,” he said, before launching into his latest The Werd segment. “When in fact, they’ve got a very good reason.”

Late Night airs on CBS at 11:35 p.m. ET.
