Musicians and celebrities weren’t the only ones dotting the red carpet at this year’s MTV Video Music Awards. Beyoncé brought the mothers of Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant, and Trayvon Martin to the ceremony with her, and posed on the red carpet with them.

Gwen Carr, Lezley McSpadden, Wanda Johnson, and Sybrina Fulton are sometimes known as the “Mothers of the Movement” since their sons’ killings by police officers helped kickstart the Black Lives Matter movement.

All three women were previously featured in the Beyoncé’s visual album Lemonade, during which they held portraits of their slain sons.

Lemonade is nominated for 11 awards at this year’s VMAs.
