Raven-Symone to star in That's So Raven spin-off at Disney Channel

Raven-Symoné will return to one of the roles that made her famous — psychic high schooler Raven Baxter — in a new spin-off of That’s So Raven which Symoné will develop and star in over at Disney Channel, where her eponymous show originally aired from 2003-2007.

On the as-yet-untitled spin-off series, Raven is now a divorced mother of two pre-teens, one of whom has actually inherited mom’s ability to see into the future (although, like Raven, the kid can likely only see just enough of future events to hilariously misinterpret them).

Symoné will be departing her co-hosting role on The View later this year in order to develop the series full-time. The actress addressed leaving the show on Thursday’s episode. “I’m excited and sad, but mostly excited. I have an announcement to make. No, I’m not pregnant… We’re doing a That’s So Raven II – with no real title. There’s no title yet. I’m very excited.”

She added: “I’m going to be leaving before the year’s up.”

Symoné went on to describe her famous character’s new life in the reboot. “I’m actually going to be a single mother, raising two kids. And one of them is going to learn that she has visions.”

“Raven’s brilliant style of fearless comedy was a driving force for Disney Channel’s success around the world,” said Disney Channel’s Worldwide executive vice president Adam Bonnett. “Her performance in That’s So Raven is timeless. We now have our eyes on the future with her, and we’re looking forward to telling more stories for a new generation with an adult Raven Baxter raising her young family.”

That’s So Raven boasts a few interesting superlatives: Not only did it mark Disney Channel’s first original multi-camera production, but it’s also the first show on the network to hit 100 episodes. According to Disney, Symoné was also the first African-American woman to have her name in a comedy series title.

Fans of the series may also remember that the show has already enjoyed one successful spin-off: Cory in the House, which followed Raven’s kid brother (played by Dancing With the Stars season 11 runner-up Kyle Massey), was Disney Channel’s first original spin-off series.

Casting is underway for the series. Scott Thomas and Jed Elinoff (Best Friends Whenever, R.L. Stine’s The Haunting Hour) will produce. Still no word on Eddie and Chelsea.
