The X-Files stars #TakeAKnee on set to support NFL protests

Mulder and Scully are taking a knee in solidarity with the NFL players.

Actors David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson each posted a photo of themselves bending the knee in character on the second season of The X-Files revival series, coming to Fox during the 2017-2018 season. They join the likes of Kelly Clarkson, Shonda Rhimes, Ice Cube, Diddy, and John Legend in supporting the football stars who refused to stand for the National Anthem in protest of racial injustice and President Trump's remarks.

Trump had used a stump speech in Alabama on Friday to reignite the controversy surrounding former 49ers player Colin Kaepernick. "Wouldn't you love to see one of these NFL owners, when somebody disrespects our flag, say: 'Get that son of a b—ch off the field right now. Out. He's fired. He's fired,'" the president said.

The attacks continued on social media, where Trump claimed anyone kneeling during the National Anthem to be disrespecting the flag and the country. He has since attempted to argue that his remarks were not about race, but Kaepernick was protesting racial injustice in America when he took a knee in August of last year.

As a result, Trump sparked a renewed controversy and prompted many athletes during NFL Sunday to either kneel or remain in the locker rooms during the anthem. Stevie Wonder, Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green, and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder were among the celebrities physically taking a knee in solidarity with the players.

The premiere date for Mulder and Scully's return has yet to be announced. However, EW revealed Karin Konoval, who played the mutant-breeding amputee on the 1996 episode "Home," will return in multiple roles.

"We're really proud of last season," Fox Entertainment chairman David Madden told EW. "We had the responsibility to explain to the audience what had happened in the intervening seven or eight years. We're free from that responsibility this time and can just plunge in and tell the stories. We're having a lot of fun doing it. Eight of the episodes will be stand-alone stories so they will be classic 'Mulder and Scully plunging into new adventures.'"
