Wet Hot American Summer: Ten Years Later trailer transports you to 1991

It was the sequel that was inevitable: In the cult hit 2001 movie Wet Hot American Summer, Bradley Cooper’s character, Ben, announces to his group of camp counselor friends: “Hey, let’s all promise that in 10 years from today, we’ll meet again, and we’ll see what kind of people we blossomed into.” When Netflix announced a season of Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp for 2015, it threw fans for a curve, because instead of showing what happened to everyone from Camp Firewood a decade after that eventful last day of camp in the summer of 1981, franchise masterminds David Wain and Michael Showalter brought you what happened to everyone on the first day of camp that summer. (If one of the jokes was that these actors were too old to be playing late-teenage counselors in 2001, that joke just got even more ridiculous.)

That’s not to say that Netflix’s next chapter after the prequel won’t delight in absurdity because they’re now playing characters that are at least 10 years older. (Well, wait, it’s been two years since the prequel, so does that make it like they’re only playing characters who are eight years older? Sorry, will figure this out offline later.) As you can see in this first trailer for the series above, there are plenty of make-outs and perhaps a few fake-outs, and it’s not out of the question that there are stake-outs, plus the return of H. Jon Benjamin’s talking can of vegetables. Almost the entire classic-edition gang is back — Amy Poehler, Paul Rudd, Elizabeth Banks, Christopher Meloni, David Hyde Pierce, Janeane Garofalo, Molly Shannon, Ken Marino, Michael Ian Black, etc. — as well as the newer gang introduced in First Day of Camp: Chris Pine, Jason Schwartzman, Josh Charles, Kristen Wiig, Lake Bell, and Rich Sommer. (Alas, Bradley Cooper was unavailable due to scheduling conflicts, presumably at 9:30.)

There’s also a new batch of Firewood folks to meet, including Adam Scott (making for a Parks and Recreation mini-reunion with Poehler — or A.C.O.D. reunion, if that was more your thing), Alyssa Milano, Dax Shepard, Skyler Gisondo, Samm Levine (previously only heard as Arty), Mark Feuerstein, Marlo Thomas, Joey Bragg, and Jai Courtney. Also: Gene (Meloni) discovers that he has a bandana-headed daughter via Gail (Shannon), Wain plays a sax-blowing Bill Clinton, and Andy (Rudd) tries to come on to Katie (Marguerite Moreau) by saying, “We could do more… like with our tongues and butts.”

The eight-episode Wet Hot American Summer: 10 Years Later starts streaming Aug. 4.
