Lady Gaga is headlining the Super Bowl halftime show

After weeks of speculation, Lady Gaga announced Thursday that she will be headlining Super Bowl LI’s halftime show.

The 30-year-old pop icon will take the stage for the annual football matchup’s 51st edition on Feb. 5, 2017 at NRG Stadium in Houston, Texas.

“It’s not an illusion. The rumors are true. This year the SUPER BOWL goes GAGA!” Gaga tweeted.

Gaga was first rumored to be in the running for the gig in mid-September, when Billboard posted an article that cited the Lady’s well-received performance of the National Anthem at the 2016 Super Bowl as the primary reason fueling the NFL’s decision to book her.

“We have had conversations with several fantastic artists about the Pepsi Super Bowl Halftime Show. However, at this point we do not have a final decision,” the NFL told Billboard at the time. “We’re happy there is so much excitement about the show.”

The following week, Us Weekly cited an anonymous source in an article confirming Gaga’s involvement, though the NFL later told EW the report was false, and that “nothing had changed” from their announcement regarding the Billboard story.

Last year, approximately 111.9 million people watched Coldplay, Bruno Mars, and Beyoncé perform during Super Bowl 50. The record for most halftime show viewers came in 2015, when Katy Perry, Missy Elliott, and Lenny Kravitz drew a television audience of around 118.5 million.

U.K. singer-songwriter Adele revealed in August she had turned down an offer to perform at the upcoming Super Bowl halftime show because, according to her, the event is “not about music.”

Lady Gaga’s next studio album, Joanne, will be released on Oct. 21. Watch the music video for the LP’s lead single, “Perfect Illusion,” below.
