YouTube star Lilly Singh taking over Carson Daly's NBC late-night spot

NBC has found its new late-night star.

The network has selected Canadian actress and YouTube sensation Lilly Singh to take over its 1:35 a.m. talk show slot. The move comes in the wake of Carson Daly announcing he’s stepping down as the host of Last Call.

Singh’s new show is titled A Little Late With Lilly Singh and the hire will make Singh the only woman to currently host a late-night talk show on a Big 4 broadcast network.

The series will be a half-hour program with Singh conducting in-studio interviews with a variety of guests as well as creating and starring in pre-taped comedy sketches. A Little Late will premiere in September.

“An Indian-Canadian woman with her own late night show? Now that is a dream come true,” the 31-year-old said in a statement. “I’m thrilled to bring it to life on NBC, and I hope my parents consider this to be as exciting as a grandchild.”

Added NBC late night executive VP Doug Vaughan: “Lilly is truly a star and we’re thrilled to welcome her to our NBC family. She is a multi-talented performer who will surely have a great rapport with not only all her guests but also with our devoted late-night audience. We can’t wait to get started.”

Singh will announce her new gig on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon tonight (see preview clip above).

Singh is best known for her YouTube channel which has 14 million subscribers where she writes, produces and stars in comedic and inspirational videos. She’s been posting videos since 2010. As an actress, she’s appeared in the HBO film Fahrenheit 451 and the movies Bad Moms and Ice Age: Collision Course. According to the BBC, in 2016 she earned $7.4 million, making her the third highest paid YouTuber in the world.

Two weeks ago Singh also made headlines by announcing she is bisexual, noting that as a bisexual female person of color that “throughout my life these have proven to be obstacles from time to time. But now I’m fully embracing them as my superpowers … No matter how many ‘boxes’ you check, I encourage you to do the same.”

Previously, Daly announced he has “decided to step away” from Last Call “to concentrate on his duties as host of the Orange Room on Today, as host and producer on The Voice and to spend more time with his family.”

“If you had told me in 2002 I would be a part of the historic NBC late-night family for 17 years, I would have said you were crazy,” Daly said in a statement. “Hard to believe it’s been so long – 2,000 episodes. It’s time to move on to something new and let someone else have access to this incredible platform. My 20’s was about finding a good job. My 30’s was about taking on as many of them as I could. Now, in my 40’s, I’m focused on quality over quantity … I’m forever grateful and proud to all who have worked with us at ‘Last Call’ over the years. So many have gone on to achieve incredible success. I’m very excited to fulfill other areas I’m passionate about within our company. The Golf Channel has always been a favorite of mine and we have a few exciting things in the works. I look forward to building on that. I could have all the jobs in the world, but none of them are more important to me than that of Dad. My family will always remain my top priority and greatest gig.”
