Host James Corden wanted to know, however, why Payne recorded the video in the first place. She explained that it was a way to both kill time and mark territory before picking up her kids. “I’m a stay-at-home mom. I only had a few minutes before I had to go pick up my kids from school, and I wanted to prove to all my Facebook friends and family that that mask was mine,” Payne said. “I knew the moment they saw it, they were gonna take it from me. I’m like, I didn’t buy it for you, little kids. I love you, but this isn’t for you.” Corden had surprises in store for Payne. They recorded a sketch for the show in which a Chewbacca-ified Payne drove Corden to work, featuring a special guest appearance by Star Wars: The Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams. Corden even shared video of Abrams showing up to record the sketch and blowing Payne’s mind. In addition, Corden shared a message from original Chewbacca actor Peter Mayhew, in which he invited Payne to a private meet-and-greet and told her, “Your attitude and lovely message really resonates with spreading the good word of Star Wars with a heart. It’s so much of why we do what we do.” See Decades of Star Wars Mania, Then and Now At that point, Payne was excited enough to bring her full “Chewbacca Mom” energy to announcing the commercial break.
