EW's editorial guidelines Published on November 17, 2016 08:52PM EST A new featurette about the making of Rogue One is highlighting some of the direct callbacks to 1977’s original Star Wars. In one shot, we see Felicity Jones’ Jyn Erso, standing alone at the military board presided over in the first movie by Princess Leia and C-3PO. In another, we get a different angle on one of the guard towers from the Yavin 4 Rebel base. As the movie heads to theaters on Dec. 16, Lucasfilm is going to greater lengths to remind casual fans that Rogue One is set back in the earlier era, and not the “modern” time of The Force Awakens (although, of course, all the galactic stories are set “a long time ago.”) The new featurette video also highlights the unity and loyalty of the Rebel alliance in the face of seemingly insurmountable odds, rising up to face down a powerful dictatorship. “All these characters are real heroes who are willing to risk everything,” says Diego Luna, who plays Rebel Captain Cassian Andor, a veteran spy for the resistance. We also get a glimpse of some new creatures and characters, including a silver astromech droid that seems to be going into meltdown, with all its panels and gears glitching wildly. There’s also a larger, black version of the Mon Calamari species, similar to the red-hued Admiral Ackbar.
